Awaji Island is easier to reach than most travellers expect — about an hour from Kobe by road, and well within reach of Osaka and Kansai International Airport. Here is how to get there.
From Kobe (about 1 hour)
The most direct route is across the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge from Kobe. By car it takes roughly an hour to reach the island’s north; frequent highway buses also run from Kobe (Sannomiya) and Maiko station directly onto Awaji. The bridge crossing itself, high above the strait, is a memorable start to the journey.
From Osaka and Kansai International Airport (KIX)
From central Osaka, Awaji is around 90 minutes to two hours by road via Kobe and the bridge. From Kansai International Airport (KIX), the simplest options are a private transfer or highway bus routed through Kobe. This makes Awaji a natural first or last stop on a wider Japan itinerary.
From Tokyo
Take the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe (about 2.5 hours from Tokyo), then continue by car or highway bus across the bridge — roughly another hour. Awaji pairs well with a Kansai leg that also takes in Kyoto, Nara or Himeji.
Getting around the island
Awaji is large and its highlights are spread out, so a car or private driver is the most comfortable way to explore. Cycling is popular along the coast for those who want to travel more slowly, and boat trips reach the Naruto whirlpools in the south.
